Kolhapur Ganesh Festival – Sindhi Touch to Celebrations

Kolhapur is famous world wide as the city of Goddess Mahalaxmi and near by suburb Gandhinagar, one the biggest wholesale market of south Maharashtra is famous as the land of hard work of Sindhi community for the realization of their dreams. Beside the business talent God has gifted Sindhis unique quality of adoptive nature, this is much interesting to know that Sindhi community is most scattered human community but still had developed an attitude which makes them homogenous and integral part of local communities and social traditions.

Kolhapur city have a rich tradition of celebrating Ganesh Festival and establishing idol of Vinayak at home, many Sindhi family adopted this tradition and enthusiasm of Sindhi community for Ganesh Festival is not lesser than the celebrations of “Cheti Chandu” [Sindhi New Year Day].

Most of the Sindhi families at Gandhinagar are establishing Ganesh Idols, beside some community mandals on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi and worship the Vighanharta till the day of Gouri Ganpati Visarjan. All the streets of Gandhinagar souded with “Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh Deva” “Ganpati Baba Moriya”. As the tradition morning and evening Aarati [prayer] is performed in all the homes the unique feature of this is all the people of the street gathered and perform Aarati one by one in all the homes of the street.

As usual joy, pleasure and enthusiasm of children is on the higher side, traditionally after the Aarati few slogans like
“Ganpati Baba” – “Moriya”
“Ek Do Teen Char” – “Ganpati Ki Jai Jaikar”

Surely this is very interesting to learn about the various new slogans created by the Sindhi kids of Gandhinagar, here are few of them

“Kutire Mein Khaja “ [ Cashew in bowl] “Ganpati Baba Raja” [Lord Ganesha is King]

“Glass Mein Pani” [Water in glass] “Ganpati Baba Rani” [Lord Ganesha is queen]

“Glass Mein Milkshake” [Milkshake in glass] “Ganpati Baba abhishek”
